Day trip to Salzburg from Kreischberg — Mozart, Old Town & Hohensalzburg

From Kreischberg, Salzburg is easily accessible for a full day of culture, history, and city life. The city lies about a two-hour drive away and forms a beautiful contrast to the tranquility of the Murtal: Baroque squares, narrow shopping streets, Mozart, palace gardens, and the mighty Hohensalzburg Fortress are all within walking distance of one another. Moreover, for many visitors, Salzburg has an extra famous side as the setting for the film The Sound of Music, with various filming locations still recognizable in and around the city.

Salzburg is compact enough to see a lot in one day, but rich enough that you have to make choices. For a first visit, we particularly recommend the historic city center, Mirabell, the Getreidegasse, and the fortress. Fans of The Sound of Music can easily include several famous film locations, including the Mirabellgarten. With children or on a second visit, Schloss Hellbrunn, the Haus der Natur, or the zoo are attractive additions.

From Kreischberg to Salzburg — approximately 2 hours drive

Distance and travel time

Salzburg is located approximately 120 kilometers from Kreischberg. Depending on the route, traffic, and roadworks, allow about 2 hours for a one-way trip. This makes Salzburg particularly suitable for a full-day trip: leave early, experience the city at a leisurely pace, and drive back in the late afternoon or evening.

Parking: preferably choose P+R

Parking in the center of Salzburg is limited, and the historic Altstadt has been largely car-free since July 1, 2026. For day visitors, Park & Ride is therefore the simplest solution. P+R Salzburg Süd is logically located on the south side of the city and has direct public transport connections to the center.

The P+R combi ticket is valid for one car and up to five people and includes both parking and public transport within Salzburg. A lower summer rate applies in July and August. Always check current rates and traffic conditions before departure.

Highlight 1 — Hohensalzburg Fortress: view over the city

The landmark of Salzburg

Hohensalzburg Fortress towers over the city and is one of the largest fully preserved castles in Central Europe. From the fortress, you have a 360° view of the rooftops of Salzburg and the surrounding mountains.

On foot or with the Festungsbahn

You can walk up, but for a day trip, the short ride on the Festungsbahn is often the most pleasant choice. At the top, there are various museums, courtyards, and viewpoints to visit. Allow roughly 1.5 to 2 hours if you really want to explore the fortress.

Tip

Go early in the day or later in the afternoon. That way, you combine the view with quieter moments in the Old Town and keep the middle of the day free for lunch and the shopping streets.

Highlight 2 — Altstadt, Getreidegasse & Mozart

Wandering through the historic city center

The Getreidegasse is the lively heart of the old town. The narrow street is known for its historic facades, passageways, and ornate signboards. Nestled among shops and cafes, at number 9, lies the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Mozart without a museum visit

Even if you don't want to visit a museum, Mozart is present everywhere in Salzburg. Walk from Getreidegasse via Universitätsplatz and the Old Market to Mozartplatz and Residenzplatz. This will give you a good overview of the historic center in a short time.

For music lovers

Those who wish to spend more time on Mozart can visit his birthplace. Keep in mind that a museum visit can easily take an hour or more; therefore, choose consciously between museum time and other highlights.

Highlight 3 — Mirabell Garden: free and photogenic

Baroque gardens on the other side of the Salzach

The Mirabell Garden is one of the most famous places in Salzburg and is free to enter. The formal gardens, statues, fountains, and sightline towards the fortress make this an ideal stop at the beginning or end of your city walk.

Sound of Music

For fans of The Sound of Music, the garden is particularly recognizable: several scenes from the film were shot here. Even without that film reference, Mirabell is a quiet and photogenic counterpart to the busier Altstadt.

With children — Hellbrunn or Haus der Natur

Schloss Hellbrunn & Wasserspiele

With children, Hellbrunn Palace is a great alternative to a long museum day. The famous Wasserspiele with hidden fountains are playful and surprising. Preferably combine Hellbrunn with a shorter visit to the Old Town so that the day doesn't become too packed.

House of Nature

In less-than-ideal weather, the Haus der Natur is a good family choice. The nature and technology museum is located close to the Old Town and offers enough content for several hours. As a result, you don't have to immediately cancel a day trip to Salzburg if it rains.

Salzburg Card — interesting if you visit multiple attractions

When is the card worth it?

The Salzburg Card provides one-time free entry to many attractions and includes public transport in the city. In 2026, a 24-hour card will cost €38 for adults and €19 for children aged 6–15 during the peak season.

For a day trip, the card can be interesting if, for example, you want to visit Hohensalzburg, a Mozart Museum, and a second paid attraction. If you mainly plan to walk, take photos, visit Mirabell, and stroll through the Old Town, single entry is often more logical.

Practical tips for a day in Salzburg

Leave early

With a travel time of approximately two hours each way, you get the most out of Salzburg if you leave Kreischberg around 07:00–08:00. That way, you arrive in the city before the biggest rush.

Good shoes

The historic city center is compact, but you can easily walk many kilometers in a day. Comfortable shoes are recommended for the fortress and the Mönchsberg.

Book popular attractions

Salzburg can be busy in July and August. For museums, concerts, and popular restaurants, it is advisable to book in advance or buy tickets online.

The Sound of Music — recognizable film locations

If you are a fan of The Sound of Music, you can visit several recognizable places during the same day trip. The Mirabell Gardens are the easiest to fit in: the Pegasus Fountain, stairs, and gardens can be seen during 'Do-Re-Mi'. At Schloss Hellbrunn stands the famous glass pavilion associated with the film. If you really want to make it a theme, consciously choose a few locations; combining the main sights of Salzburg and all the film locations in one day quickly becomes too much.

Do not combine too much

Salzburg has enough to offer for several days. For a one-day trip from Kreischberg, a combination of three main attractions works best: Mirabell, the Old Town, and Hohensalzburg. Choose Hellbrunn or a museum as a substitute, not as an extra mandatory stop.
