Mountain carting on the Kreischberg — 5 km descent through the mountains
Down a mountain road with three wheels, a low center of gravity, and two handbrakes: mountain carting is normally one of the most adventurous summer activities on the Kreischberg. You take the 10-person gondola up comfortably and then drive back from the mountain station to the middle station over a distance of approximately 5 kilometers.
The combination of mountain panorama, speed, and steering yourself makes the activity attractive to active vacationers who want something different from hiking or cycling. View here is the video.
In short
- Approximately 5 km of descent per ride
- Up in the 10-person gondola
- Level: no experience needed
- Suitable for families and groups of friends
Important for summer 2026 — temporarily no mountain carts
No rides with Mountain Carts or Monster Rollers will be offered on the Kreischberg during the 2026 summer season. Official Kreischberg and Styria information states that this is not possible due to construction work.
For a stay after 2026, it is therefore advisable to check the official Kreischberg website in advance to see if the activity is being offered again.
This is how mountain carting works on the Kreischberg
Step 1, up by gondola
The 10-person gondola takes you comfortably from the valley station to the mountain station at an altitude of approximately 1,800 meters. The activity thus begins immediately with a beautiful view of the Murtal and the surrounding mountain ranges.
Step 2, pick up mountain cart
When the activity is in operation, the mountain carts are issued at Intersport Rent at the gondola's mountain station. You will receive the cart and the necessary instructions before departure.
Step 3, descend approximately 5 km
Next follows the descent along the mountain road towards the middle station. The track is approximately 5 kilometers long. Thanks to the wide construction, low center of gravity, and individual brakes, you can control your own speed.
Step 4, return at the middle station
The mountain cart is returned at the middle station of the 10-person gondola. From there, you can take the gondola back to the valley or continue your day on the mountain.

Who enjoys mountain karting?
Action without having to be an experienced athlete
Mountain carting is mainly about steering, braking, and enjoying the descent. You don't have to be a mountain biker, and no special fitness is required like for a long climb or an intense mountain ride.
Families and groups of friends
Precisely because everyone can choose their own pace, the activity is attractive to families with older children, couples, and groups of friends. Age, height, and supervision rules generally apply to children; check the current conditions as soon as the mountain carts are available again.
Safety first
Always follow the rental company's instructions, adjust your speed to the conditions, and maintain a sufficient distance. Helmet use and any additional safety rules may be part of the rental terms and conditions. Check these in advance upon reopening.
Combine mountain carting with a day on the Kreischberg
More to do at 1,800 meters
A mountain cart ride combines well with other summer activities on the mountain. Around the mountain station, there are hiking opportunities across the alpine meadows and through the pine forest. For families, there are the Dinowald, the Kreischi Safari, and the Kreischi Geisterbahn, among others.
Disc Golf as an alternative in 2026
Since mountain carting is temporarily unavailable in the summer of 2026, DiscGolf is a fun additional activity on the same mountain. DiscGolf Park Kreischberg is located at approximately 1,800 meters, and use is included with a valid lift ticket.
Murau GästeCard
With the Murau GästeCard According to regional information, one up-and-down ride on the Kreischberg gondola is included; a discount applies to subsequent up-and-down rides. This ensures that a summer day on the Kreischberg remains attractive even without mountain carting.
